Oh wow - Plymouth Indiana! I live just north of there in South Bend. Been to Plymouth many times. I would have never guessed they would have had a recording studio there or even had a college past or present. It's not a big town, just a farming town with only 10k people. Would have been even less in the 1920's and 1930's. I should go thrifting in Plymouth, probably too late now to find any 78's in this day and age though.

Explain to me why little wonders LPs arent for kids?

I would love to start collecting 78's again. I had a small but fun collection back in the 90's, but had to liquidate when my mom died and I had to sell the family home. Still love those things and would love to get a player too, but not sure how to get started again. I do have my collection on cassette tape at least.

Glad you aren't just tossing the rejects. I started out on mostly trash before I was a teenager. Now, almost 45, I am rather picky. I also love many of Fred Waring's early 30s records. Some of them are actually in "hi-fi." Victor phased this out because the high frequencies wore out too quickly. I also love early 40s Gene Krupa, especially with Anita O'Day. Killer drums, killer band. Also plenty of good sweet tunes from the band.

It's amazing when you look at what is out there in the world at how little that museums actually have. I never would have knew about these.

Your history is way off! All of the parks were owned and operated by the national park service. Utah Parks company was merely a concessionaire that ran the transportation and lodgings because that is outside of the purview of the park service. Xanterra is the concessionaire in many of the western parks like grand canyon today.

Charlie Patton wrote a song about my grandfather called the Tom Rushen Blues. He would give him rides to different honks while my grandfather emptied his juke boxes which had 78's. I still have a box of them. They are really fragile. Anyway, good site. Glad I stumbled on it. Just Sam

00:34 thank you for saying this. there's so much snobbishness, elitism, and gatekeeping in the record collecting community it's unreal. they think it's their own playground for the rich and nobody else can participate. im a new collector too and people like that are exceptionally unhelpful and just turns people off from the hobby. i avoid entire forums because of people like that who are allowed to exist there unpunished.

This is not unlike what rich techies will do today when some new gizmo comes out. Make some deliberately expensive electronic gizmo just for some mundane invitation or party gift to flaunt how rich they are. "People never change, only time does."

I just wanted to say thank you for making this channel. I recently went on a massive collecting trip going through hundreds of 78s. Without watching your videos i wouldn’t have known what i was looking at when i found little wonders or Edison red stars. Seriously doing great work here man

My suggestion on finding out these businesses would be to take a guess at an approximate year to start, and then look for a city directory for that year, and find the business, get the address, then plug that into google and see if you can turn up some newspaper archive hits. And try and think of words that were used in the period when doing OCR searches.

Sambas - better if Brazilian recordings over American dance band collectors (Mambo's are another one, but jazz bands playing them are good). Thin RCA Vinyl - have a Hot Lips Page Let Me In - very cool Herbie Fields is ok, the Savoy's are better jazz. Cugat earlier Victor's are not bad, like the Congas, and if Miguleto Valdez is singing it is worth it. Too bad the swing bands are in poor shape. I still enjoy them, Kay Starr is one of the best of the 1945-55 era singers. I've been through this a hundred times myself - and yes this is a common batch of recordings. Rex Stewart Big 8 would be the one I would buy of all these. Finally - great information

Do you have any videos that go into grading? It would be nice to see what makes what and examples of sound, because it seems so subjective . What one person says ruins the sound another may say isnt intrusive.

I recently found a couple1909 Little Wonders. Do they need a special needle to play them? I have heard our newer needles get ruined by old 78's

When I see old shellac records at yard sales and Goodwill I always buy the entire lot. Nobody else will and they will just go in the trash otherwise. I end up with 40-50 lb boxes or a tattered old binder crumbling in my hands with records not played since WW1 for just a couple bucks. I seem to remember seeing a something-phone label, but I am not entirely certain. Just a blur of names among many. I'll have to look again now that I seen this video. They all need to be washed and taken better care of, some have mildew growing on them and they have a particular odor that makes my nose runny.

I have slowly been getting into collecting 45rpm records, and now I need to get smaller boxes? But seriously, I have seen a few AL Jolsen in 78s and 45s, but I haven't seen any of the little wonder. Could be they just get snatched up. But then again, the record store probably holds them back and sells them at a premium price point.

I'm glad it wasn't me that found it because I'd have just sold it (delta blues isn't my favourite but I'd have known what it was) I collect 78s, have tens of thousands of them and so this would be like me finding a Berliner or a rare jazz or operatic record. I can imagine the thrill you got all too well Mark, awesome stuff and I hope you keep it for ever!

How do people know what to look for As in When the music is this old ( majoritarily out of living memory) who’s desirable ?

It's been my experience over the past 60 + years is that the Royal Blue records as noted above was a fine wash over a Black shellac disc by doing the the records wore quite easily and more subject to lam cracks. I have also had some late 30's Tommy Dorsey radio shows pressed by Radio Records that were pressed on 12" discs (three in a set) that were Blue Wax from 1937

One record I've never seen a video of or at least be played on a turntable is "Chick Webb - I Can't Dance (I got ants in my Pants)"

Patton, like Son House, was not ''playing'' (or if he was, he was ''playing for keeps''). No ''hokum'' blues here. I've lived with ''O Death'' since the early 90's, the hisses and pops of the old ''Document'' series don't bother me at all, though I recently heard a much enhanced ''34 Blues'' that makes me think that I should reinvestigate the library before YT become s totally intolerable. One mystery that still remains- the fourth volume of the Document series had a white guy on the ''cover'' of the CD. Does anybody have any idea what the story is on that? Liked and subbed.

I don't know if this counts, but I had a record that was made by Liberace, and it was Brahms Lullaby, with him singing, and Dark Eyes with orchestra, and his brother George, on violin, it was offered, or sponsored by the Fort Wayne National Bank, no idea what label pressed it, it may have been Capital.

In short was this a show like GEORGE BURNS and GRACIE ALLEN that would leave a Golden age radio trail, or just (recorded) guest routine put in other sh9wd

I have no idea who who Rustic Chatterwitz were, but depending how aired maybe just a place holder name, used if the rather frisky routine was assembled into a show. /that is/a recorded act dropped in as part of shoa Rather than as completed show. In that case may have aired as (say) Alice and Bob. Another station may have used Mr. + Mrs. Loudmouth. In early days of Victor they had few artists and so semiclassic singer DeGogosa had lots of fake names, like Senior Fransisco added by Victor 9:05 😮 9:05 9:05 😊 to simulator having lots of singers. Later relabeled with his real name, as told in book THE FABULUS PH0Ñ0GRAPH and real name labeled in later copies. But if sorry we're not known collectors would research fake names in vain. In early radio sometime studio musicians would solo with fake names, like staff violinist playing square dance violin as "Rustic Joe" one week and as "Gypsy Lugosi" another.
